Shortly after the occupation of Poland by the German army, a group of about 70 Poles were delivered to Dachau concentration camp, where they were immediately subjected to severe mistreatment by the SS camp guards, among them the accused. 10 of the Polish prisoners died as a result of the beatings. A Czechoslovakian Rabbi while speaking to the inmates was shot and killed by the accused. A second group of prisoners - mostly Czech civilians - were also delivered to the camp around this time.
